The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) is an instrument to measure the magnetic moment in weak and strong magnetic fields up to ca 600kA/m. The sample is located in the gap of an electromagnet, and the magnetic moment is determined by vibrating the sample with respect to a set of pick up coils. The vibrating magnetized sample will induce an electrical voltage in the pick up coils. This voltage is proportional to the magnetic moment of the sample. By ramping the field up and down in magnitude and direction, a full hysteresis loop can be acquired.
